Onward is a not-for-profit thinktank whose mission it is to renew the centre right by generating new ideas and reaching out to new groups of people. Since we launched in 2018, we have built a reputation as one of Westminster’s most influential and innovative centre-right thinktanks.

Onward is looking for an exceptional individual to lead our Energy Commission, the task of which is to devise a credible plan for UK energy policy for a centre-right government, capable of day one implementation. The UK is at an inflection point. Ultra-high energy costs are driving inflation, deterring investment and harming growth. Onward’s work will provide the blueprint that an incoming centre-right government could adopt to ensure energy security, sustainability and affordability.

The successful candidate will need at least 3 years’ experience writing high-quality research, with deep specialist knowledge of energy policy, and be able to demonstrate strong project management experience. They must also be comfortable engaging with and contributing to public policy debates, including through the media, policy events and meetings with MPs, ministers and civil servants.

The successful candidate will be joining Onward at a pivotal moment. Having launched seven years ago, we have established a reputation for rigorous research that gets traction not only in newspapers but also in government policy and across the centre-right. We pride ourselves on developing policy ideas that are timely, practical to deliver and politically possible.

About Onward

Onward is an independent, not-for-profit think tank registered in England and Wales (no. 11326052).

Onward’s mission is to develop bold and practical ideas to boost economic opportunity, build national resilience, and strengthen communities across all parts of the United Kingdom.

We are not affiliated to any party but believe in mainstream conservatism. Our vision is to address the needs of the whole country: young and old, urban and rural, for all
communities across the UK – particularly places that have too often felt neglected or ignored by Westminster.

We believe in an optimistic conservatism that is truly national – one that recognises the value of markets, supported by a streamlined state that is active not absent. We are unapologetic about standing up to vested interests, putting power closer to people, and supporting the hardworking and aspirational.
