Trust in the systems and institutions of our democracy is at a low. Too many people feel they have not got a fair deal and that they have to grapple with insurmountable challenges. Onward’s Renewing our Social Contractresearch programme aims to articulate a fresh collective understanding of the balance between rights and responsibilities in our society. It will set out practical policies to rebuild between communities and the state and within communities themselves. It will consider how to arrive at outcomes that are widely accepted as fair, even when the needs of different groups or communities are directly in conflict.
